Picking a Consultant to have a Direct Sales Party With

There are many direct sales consultants out there that would all love to host a party for you.  But how do you decide which one you want to invite into your home?  There are a variety of methods that people use and which one you pick is up to you.

Booking at a Party – Quite often people will book their party with the person who was the consultant at an event they attended.  A lot of people do not know half a dozen different consultants with each company so they pick the person that is easiest and that they have met already.  But if you do not get along with this person, there are other options.

Ask Friends – If you have not been to a party recently and are looking for a direct sales consultant, you can try asking friends if they know anyone.  You may be surprised at who they know and that they can hook you up with.

Company Website – A great method to find consultants is to visit the company’s website.  Chances are there is a spot where you can enter where you live and it will list several consultants in the area that you can get in touch with.  If you are not sure, pick a few different ones and send them a few questions.  See how they respond and see which one seems to mesh with you the best.  Even if you do not see anyone in your area, you can contact the company and they will find someone for you.  I recently acquired a customer who did this – the consultant search wasn’t working for her, she called my company and they sent me the lead.

Local Classifieds – Another place you can look for a consultant is your local classified ads.  Depending on the website you are using will determine how successful you will be.  I know that I have difficulties getting ads posted on some sites as others like to report them so that they are the only ones.

Facebook – Try searching for the company you are looking for on Facebook.  I find that those who are local to me come up first in my searches.  If the consultant has a fanpage or information in their profile, they should come up.

Search Engines – Go to your favorite search engine and type in “Company Name” and your city.  I have had a few people tell me that they located me that way.

Between all these methods, you should be able to find someone to come in and do a party for you.  If you can’t, it may be an indication that you should join the company as you may have an area that no one is in yet!

Increasing Party Sales as Host

As a host of a direct sales party, there are some things that you can do to increase the amount of sales that you get and therefore, increasing the amount of product that you get for free or discounted.        free

Invite Everyone – Invite everyone you know to attend.  Even if you do not think that they will attend or that they have any interest in the product, invite them.  Some people will surprise you by showing up and being your biggest spenders, or even booking their own party.

Remind People – Remind people of your event.  Some people book their schedule a few weeks out but some people cannot tell you what they are doing until a few days before the event. For this reason, make sure to send a few reminders and call a couple days before the party to remind them that it is almost there.

Collect Outside Orders – If you have people who tell you that they wish that they could attend, but cannot, give them a catalogue and tell them that they can still order.    Sometimes they just tell you that they cannot attend as they do not want to attend or spend money, but by offering to show them a book, you will find out who truly wants to attend and those that are just avoiding it.  Remember, not every product works for everyone, so if they just do not want to attend, that is okay.

Give Testimonials – When you invite people to the party, make sure you tell them how much you love the product.  This gets people excited to attend and prepared to spend some money at your event.  If they need to speak to their partner before spending money, this allows them an idea of what they may want to buy and establishing a budget.

Share the Website – Even if your consultant does not give you a website for people to check out, find the companies website and share that with those you invite.  They can then see the product in advance and start planning what they may want to buy.

Can I bring kids to the party?

This is a question to ask the consultant as everyone feels differently about kids at the party.   There may be rules about having kids at parties depending on the product but for the most part, kids can be allowed if the hostess wants them there.

One thing to consider is if your kids can behave for an hour or two while the event is going on and ordering is taking place.  If you do not think they can, it may be best to leave them at home or not attend.   Maybe their grandparents would like to watch them for a few hours or they have friends they would like to visit.

If you feel that they can behave themselves for a few hours, it likely is okay, but check with the consultant.  Depending on the product, kids may not be welcome due to the break-ability factor or due to costs.  I find at my candle parties the kids are sometimes the most engaged as they enjoy sniffing all the scents and they make no secret as to what they do and do not like.

One exception to this is adult toy parties.  Anyone under 18 or the age of majority where they live is not allowed.  This is not because the consultant does not want the kids there; it is due to the law.  A consultant can be fined and have her business shut down if she does not follow the rules.  If she is not sure, she can also ID people.  I know of reps that have left as there were minors in attendance who would not leave.

What Direct Sales Consultants Want You to Know

There are several things that a direct sales consultant wants their customers to know.  Here are some examples:

Tupperware home party in Sarasota, Florida

  • This is a job for us, not a hobby.  We are taking time out of lives to come to your home and present our product, and we expect you to do your part to make the party successful.
  • Please do not ignore us.  We have been doing these parties for a while so we know what steps to take to ensure that your party is a success.   Listen to our suggestions and if you do not agree with us, please ask us the reason behind it.  There is likely a good reason due to past experience.
  • If the party starts at 7 pm, please stress to your friends to be at your house by 7 pm.  It is disrespectful to me by not starting until 7:30 not to mention for those that showed up by 7 pm. If you know people tend to run late, tell them 6:30 or 6:45 so that they arrive on time.
  • Not all of us do this full time.  For this reason, do not expect us to return your phone call within 2 hours.  Please give us the courtesy of 24 hours before you look for another consultant or decide that we are not interested in helping you.  If we are at our other job, we likely cannot return your call immediately.
  • For me, a good party has to do with how many people buy.  This should be true for you as the more that buy, the more free items you get which is likely part of why you invited me.
  • Keep food and drinks to a minimum before the party.  I do not want to hang around for 3 hours because everyone is too busy eating.  I have family and friends that I have left to come do your event; I would like to get home to them.

Why do Direct Sales Consultants do Hostess Coaching?

You may wonder why the direct sales consultant that you have booked a party with keeps calling you before your event.  There are actually a few very valid reasons for doing this.  That said, it is not something that all reps do and some prefer to do hostess coaching via email or other means instead of over the telephone.

Preparation – A lot of times a hostess does not know what all to do to get maximum attendance when she has her direct sales event.  By doing hostess coaching, the consultant can help to get a maximum amount of attendees which gives the host a larger customer base which will help to get all the items that she wants for free.

Outside Orders– Quite often the hostess has people who cannot attend but want to order.  By staying in touch, the consultant is able to answer any questions these other people may have and also get the totals for the hostess.  Some hostesses are not comfortable with adding up orders themselves so this helps them out.

Reliability – While this may not seem like an obvious reason to stay in touch, when the direct sales consultant gets in touch with you on a regular basis, you know that you can trust them to show up when they are supposed to.  I have had people who told me that they booked with someone and they never heard from them as their date got closer so they found me instead.  Their loss, I once had a $1,000 party due to this!

Space – Many consultants require space when they arrive whether it is for setting up their display or a place for ordering.  When talking to the hostess beforehand, they can let her know what they require to make sure that the hostess can have it ready when they arrive.

Wish List – It is beneficial for both the hostess and the consultant if the hostess has her wish list made up in advance.  With the coaching, the direct sales consultant can make sure that she has thought about this and knows what she wants to earn free at her party.

While you may find it a bit of a hassle when the direct sales consultant calls you and wants to know how things are going and if you have any questions, they are really doing it for both of your benefits.

What to expect when hosting a Direct Sales party?

Chances are, when you booked your event the consultant gave you some information to look over and to plan your party with.  Or, if you booked a few months out, the consultant is mailing this information to you when the date is closer.

The next thing that will likely happen is that the consultant will call you closer to in order to make sure that the party is still going to be happening and to go over some details with you.  This will be things like the amount of space that will be available or what is required to setup the display.  A separate space may be required for ordering or maybe she wants to make sure you have gone through the host package.  This is a good time to ask the consultant about any questions that you may want to ask.

You likely will have two or three calls from the consultant in the weeks leading up to your party.  This is simply because the direct sales consultant wants to make sure you have a successful party and that you are able to earn everything on your wish list when you have your party.  Many people do not host these types of events often so they require some guidance and help in order to have a satisfactory event.

The night of your party, the consultant likely will show up before the time you have all your guests arrive.  This gives them a chance to set up the display in a way that pleases them as it is always different in each house.  Then, when guests arrive everything is ready to go and the presentation is able to start.

The direct sales consultant may close your party that night or they may wait a few days depending on your preference.  Do not be surprised if they want to close that night as it benefits everyone instead of waiting a few more days.

Once your product is in, chances are your direct sales consultant will end up sorting it for you and delivering it all sorted out.  If you are not sure, make sure you ask what they do in this regard as not all consultants do this.

How to Get Guests to Leave

Apparently this can be an issue for some people, as in asking people for ideas on what they would like me to cover on this blog, one thing people asked about was how to get people to leave.  The majority of people are likely going to leave once they have put in the order, but you may have those people who just do not figure it out and you think may be planning to spend the night.  Here are a few things you can try:

Clean Up – One of the signs of an evening being over is cleaning up.  If you don’t want to ask people to leave, you can try cleaning up any snacks or treats and see if people get the idea.

State the Obvious – Chances are, once the consultant has left, you may want your friends to leave.  But they may not be getting the hint.  So one of the first things you can try is just asking everyone to leave.  You might try stating something like “Thanks for coming out everyone.  But it’s getting late, and I need to be …. “and see how that works.  They may not have realized how late that it has gotten.

Turn out the Lights – If people still do not get the hint when you politely ask them to leave, you could try turning out the lights.  If they are sitting in the living room and you turn off any lights in that room, they should get the idea that you are serious about them going.

Call a Cab – If any of your guests need a cab, or a ride home, let them know that you have already called their cab or if they are the last guest, you can tell them that you are ready to take them home.  If you have someone else who is driving them home, contact that person and have them come get them.

Call the Cops– If nothing else, you could try calling the cops to get people to leave your home, but depending on how busy they are, and how important they feel your complaint is, they may take a few hours to arrive.  It is likely best to handle it on your own.

How often to Host a Party?

The answer to this question depends on a few factors.  Make sure you consider each one when you are thinking about hosting multiple parties, especially if you want to host them close together.

Company Choice – Are you planning to host the same type of party each time – for instance, jewellery? Or do you want to host a jewellery party, a candle party and a purse party?   If you are looking to host direct sales parties that are different types of products, you could probably do a party per month.  But if you are looking to host another party with the same company, it is best to wait until they have a new catalogue out as a reason for people to attend a second party.

Money – A big factor to consider is your own personal finances as well as your friends. Quite often the products that are sold through direct sales parties are those that are luxuries for people.  For this reason, your friends may not be able to attend all that often and make a purchase.  But, you could host if you have funds to make some purchases and your friends may decide to book their own party to get the items for free.  And depending on the company, you could get some rewards just for them booking.

Time – Another consideration is how much time you have or your friends have.  Some people just cannot attend a party too often due to work commitments, needing a babysitter or other reasons.   But depending on what their reasons for not attending are, you may be able to get around some of them.  For instance, if you are having a jewellery party, kids could possibly come if there is a bedroom they can play in.

Attendance – Do you have enough people that you can invite that you will get a decent attendance at each event?  While you may not mind if no one shows up, or only one or two people, the consultant will not be impressed if she shows up and gets no sales.  Of course, if you are putting in enough sales to make it a party, then it is not such a big deal.

Of course, these are just my opinion.  Do you think there are different considerations for how often to host a party?

Sales Specials for your Guests

When you are having a party, you need to get some of your friends to attend to make the event a success.  But you may be wondering if your guests will get something when they attend to make it worthwhile.  In short, the answer is most likely yes.

It is always best to ask the consultant about what guest specials are happening.  They can change from month to month and may vary in regards to what the customer gets.

Different guest options:

  • Discount – Guests may get a discount at a direct sales events when they spend a certain amount
  • Free Product – Another guest incentive is free items for spending a certain amount
  • Exclusive Items – There may be exclusive items that your guests qualify for when they spent a certain amount but these products tend to be reserved for the hostess
  • Booking Gift – Many companies offer a free gift to any guest who attends your party and decides to book their own direct sales event.

How to Host a Party

No matter your reason for throwing a party, it is important to be a proper host. Take the time out of your schedule to plan the perfect party for your situation. It will depend greatly on the reason for hosting the party, and the space you have available. Take this into account before starting the process.

Direct sales

One common reason to host a party comes from a form of direct sales. The party plan is when a party is hosted from the home or other place with the intention of selling a product. This can be helpful for both the host and party goers to get the most from their party experience. This can be any product from kitchen appliances to makeup and other facial accessories.

The important thing to remember about planning this type of party is to not focus the entire thing on the product. Although it will be the focal point, make sure there are other elements. Set up the party in a space where guests can talk and get to know each other. Have food and beverages available whether it is simple snacks or a full on meal. These elements will keep your guests happy.

Being a good host

For those who get nervous about hosting a party, there are many different options to ensure your event is a success. The first and potentially most important is to give yourself plenty of time. Start planning the party as early as possible by putting it together one piece at a time until the actual date. This will keep you from frantically running around at the last minute and make it an allover success. Don’t try and do it all on your own, but get the help of your family and friends whenever possible.

The first thing to decide on is why you are throwing a party. Is it for a direct sale, a birthday party, the holidays, or something else entirely? Make the theme correspond with the reason for the party. From there you can plan the games and activities that will fit in with the plans the best. Choose those that your guests will enjoy, and that will work best for your own situation.

One of the biggest mistakes a host can make is not letting others know about their event far enough in advance. Send out invites at least a full week before the party is scheduled to take place. If you send it out too far in advance, some may forget about the event by the time the date rolls around. If you have guests that are coming from far away, be sure to send the invites far in advance, but also send a follow up reminder. This reminder can be a text or an email, something simple to reiterate your plans.

There are many aspects of being a good host. Make sure that you start out planning your party right. No matter your reason for throwing the event, be prepared and organized way beforehand to ensure everything will run smoothly on the actual event.
