What Does a Home Party Look Like Going into 2015?

If you are new to direct sales, or just curious, what a home party is, there is no need to look any further.   But the definition of a home party is continually changing, just like everything else.

If someone is having an “in home party” chances are they are inviting you and everyone else over for a chance to see the product and then make a purchase. Expect to be there for two to three hours depending on the product, if you want to visit, or other variables such as starting late or having to wait your turn to order.

Sample Event

Sometimes instead of a party you will have a hostess that would like you to come over and show them a few products. Maybe these are seasonal items or newer products that she has not experienced yet or she wants your opinion on what you recommend. These are much more casual, she might have one or two people over but these are people who have already tried and enjoyed your products but are not comfortable ordering just through ta catalogue.

Facebook Party

With Facebook allowing you to have event pages, many people are opting to do their party online. You are invited to an event and you go to that event page at the correct time. The hostess might say something briefly but then the consultant takes over and basically posts her presentation.   Hopefully she has typed it up before hand to make it go a bit faster and then people can ask questions on each topic as they have the chance.

Hybrid Catalogue Party

While a catalogue party isn’t necessarily a home party, many consultants will give their hostess a few samples or products for them to take around and get orders. This gives people a chance to experience the product if they have not done so but the consultant does need to trust the hostess a bit more to get her products back. Typically this is not an issue.

I find that these types of events are more popular than they used to be as people are busier. They do not want to spend an evening out of their lives at a sales type event, especially if they already know what they want.

 

Choosing The Right Exhibition Stand

When you are attending a trade show you will need to make your booth stand out and one of the ways to do this is through exhibition stands. These are normally lightweight so they can be transported easily and are used to promote your product and services. There are several different kinds of stands available today and each of them has its own merits. The one you choose will depend upon your own specific needs. To help you decide, here are some of the stands on offer:

  • Twist Display Stand: These are a kind of pull-up banner which can be displayed on portable stands and printed with high quality graphics for maximum impact. They are perfect for trade shows and exhibitions because they create seamless back walls for a really professional look. Because they allow you to join many different units together in a seamless display, they are great if you have a lot of space to fill. They are also versatile because their tensioning system allows the alignment to be adjusted so they can sit against both smooth and uneven surfaces. They are also light and easy to transport from place to place.
  • Pop-Up Stands: These continue to be highly popular for companies attending exhibitions. This is mainly because they are easy to transport and erect, but once taken down don’t take up too much room in storage. There are different varieties of these – they can, for example, be made from cardboard and fabric – but all are an impressive back-drop to any trade show booth if printed with good quality graphics and a strong design. For extra versatility, some can have Velcro-friendly front panels so that posters can be changed.
  • Poster Display Stands: These are freestanding display stands which can usually come in cable, rod or modular versions. The great thing about these is that they can come with single or mixed pocket arrangements so you can interchange posters depending on the exhibition you are attending. They can also come in a wide variety of sizes depending on your needs and can be placed side-by-side or perpendicular to each other. If you want something versatile and low-cost, these are a safe bet.
  • Folding Display Stands: Folding display stands and exhibition boards are great for companies operating on a strict budget. They are low-cost, lightweight and because they are folded they don’t take up much space in transit. Generally made from PVC, they are durable and both pin- and Velcro-friendly so that posters can be interchanged as often as required.
  • POS Stands: Point-of-sale or info stands are more specialised items which are used for both retail environments or exhibitions. They will normally consist of a poster board on top and some smaller leaflet displays below. If you have a particular new product you want to promote then they are ideal because you can draw visitors’ attention with a high-impact poster and then they can take away more detailed information in the leaflets placed below. However, if your booth is simply to provide a more generalised overview of your company then you would be better off with one of the larger stands mentioned above.

When you’ve worked out which kind of exhibition stand best fits your needs, the next thing to do is find a supplier. It’s worth shopping around to see which companies offer the best deals – always remembering that you have to pay for quality. It’s important, for example, that you check how the graphics will be added to your stand to ensure that the solutions used will not only look good but will also be durable so you can use the stands over and over again.

It’s a good idea to get a recommendation for a stand supplier from somebody who has used them many times and understands what is important. When you’ve found a few companies you think might be able to offer what you want then go and visit each one in turn to discuss your requirements. This is a good opportunity to ask to see examples of their work so you can get an idea of what they might be able to do for you. It’s probably best, if you can, to find a local supplier so you can visit them face-to-face and contact them easily if there is a problem with any of the products they have supplied to you.

5 Ideas to Quiet the Crowd at a Direct Sales Event

Sometimes when doing an in home party, the crowd can get a bit loud and rowdy and you cannot be heard over their voices.  But fear not, there are a few things that you can do to get their attention again to allow you to finish your presentation.  (Remember, keep it short, people have short attention spans!)

There are a few techniques you can use, so decide what you feel comfortable with, or try them all and see what works best for you.

1)      Talk Quieter – A great thing to do is start talking more quietly.  Chances are someone who is trying to listen will start shushing the crowd because they cannot hear what you are saying anymore.

2)      Play a Game – Depending on the game you play, this will allow them to get a bit of their wildness out or else capture their attention.  Play even if people are not paying attention, and maybe when they see you giving out a prize they will stop talking.

3)      Ask a Question – Ask the group a question about something you said.  Those that were paying attention should know the answer and those that were talking may stop when they realize what is going on.  You could give a gift to those who can tell you what you said.

4)      Hostess – Make sure you tell your hostesses in advance that if the group gets out of control, she will in charge of quieting them down.  Work out some sort of signal in advance or just simply ask her to get her guests quieted down.

5)      Ask for Help – Another idea is to ask one of the talkers to come help you with your demo.  Say that you need an assistant and ask them to come up.  Or you could ask them to try demonstrating a product that you have.  This is especially fun to do if you can hear them talking about how they could do a better job.

6)      Blow a Whistle – Some people carry a whistle that they can blow to get people’s attention back.

Do you really provide an in home party?

This may seem like a silly question and one that you reply “Duh!” to, but hear me out.

When you mention to someone that you do home parties, how often does someone give you a horrified look and then runs away from you as fast as they can?  Quite often?  Then maybe it is time to re-look at what you do and consider renaming your event.

Oohh.. did you see that?  I called it an event!  That is a start!  Let us start by calling these “In HomEnglish: Screenshot taken from the video link ...e Events”.  Doesn’t that sound a bit nicer than an in home party and something that maybe isn’t so scary?

Let’s take it one step further.  What type of products do you sell that you could have an event for?  If you sell food products, maybe you want to have a “Tasting Event” instead of a tasting party.  Its interesting how one word can make a difference as an event just sounds that much nicer and less intimidating.  It also tells people that something is going on with food, they get to taste it but an event says that they do not have to come out and spend money if they do not want to.  There are too many people that associate an in home party to spending money that they run far away from you.

As well, in this context, event becomes a bit of a novel idea which may compel more people to come out and see what is going on.   They have not been to an event before and they are curious.  As a direct sales consultant, you can run these differently than your regular in home party and make it more interesting and interactive for the guest.  Get them involved – taste the products, help you put them together, or whatever they can help you with – and see if it doesn’t help to increase your sales at the end of the night.
